Party Poopers: Critics denounce Pizza Hut reading program

Ok, so I see their point about this program promoting “junk food” and forcing a corporate entity on kids. HOWEVER. BOOK IT! started when I was in 5th grade and it was a really really great motivator for me and, hell, my entire class to get into reading. It is simply a fun program for kids and if it gets them into reading, I really don’t see the problem.

What’s worse a bunch of incurious skinny kids who are going to be slaves to corporate America anyway or a bunch of well-read, smart fat kids who will be more likely to think for themselves because of all the books they’ve read?

Critics denounce Pizza Hut reading program

It just seems like another cheap ass attempt to take responsibility for healthy habits away from parents and their kids. Our entire culture contributes to obesity, so condemning one really beneficial program because some researchers claim it contributes to our fat butts doesn’t make a damn bit of sense to me.

Hell, some kids in my school never got to eat out anyway because they were poor, so this was a huge deal for them. In my family for a long time, this was the only time we actually got to eat at Pizza Hut, so it was pretty fun. Also to a kid (at least in the 80’s), getting your own “personal” pizza was really neat.

I really don’t care for Pizza Hut pizza, nowadays. I think, however, that it’s far more important for people to read who might not otherwise be motivated to do so than to worry if the program is making them fat.
