Sam Beckett and Thomas Magnum

There are two drawbacks to being on maternity leave: the amount of time breastfeeding takes out of your day and daytime television. We have DirecTV and there are a LOT of channels to choose from. Unfortunately, there usually isn’t anything I really want to watch…Except reruns of Magnum P.I. I discovered that there are 2 episodes on WGN the Chicago superstation at noon and 2:00 p.m. Over the past week, I have greatly enjoyed watching these shows I haven’t seen in 20 years. We watched Magnum for a few years until the Cosby Show came on and we had to fight with mom to watch it instead. Magnum has aged far better than the Cosby show, I think.

Another favorite show is on now on SciFi all day – Quantum Leap. As cheesy as it was from time to time, I thoroughly enjoyed the show from the first episode. Interestingly, Magnum, P.I. was written by both Donald P. Bellisario (the creator of Quantum Leap) and Glen A. Larson. And they both worked on Battlestar Galactica in the 70’s. Larson is actually working on the new BG, too.

Since I’m thinking about it, here are my top 10 things I like about Magnum, p.i.
10. Those 80’s short shorts!
9. TC and Rick…you couldn’t find better pals anywhere!
8. The giggle.
7. The Ferrari. Still a damn sexy car.
6. Magnum.
5. The lads.
4. That theme song!
3. The voice over.
2. Magnum’s complete disregard for rules.
1. The barbed exchanges between Higgins and Magnum…well actually Higgins and everyone. What a great character.
